An important element of the training Care for Children provides to the orphanages and foster families we support is about helping to prepare their foster children for independence and adulthood. Within that, a helpful part of this training is helping the children figure out how to make their interests relate to a potential career.
Furthermore, everyone knows the classic professions such as law, medicine or education. But what about graphic design, Human Resources or managing a shop? Which is why we're thrilled to share that our Thai Project, in partnership with the Chiang Mai Home for Boys (CMHB), held its first 'Preparation for Independence' day for 80 children from both foster care in the community and the boys from the home.
The first of a series of career days, Care for Children and the Chiang Mai Home for Boys invited a group of local professionals to come and talk to the boys about their chosen line of work, how they got there, and share some inspiring rags-to-riches stories.
The children were able to hear from wide variety of professionals, including a pro football player (Chiang Mai FC), an IT technician who runs a computer gaming shop, an architect, and a senior HR Manager from a 5* luxury resort. The boys also had a chance to take part in team-building exercises and practice being in a job interview.
We all loved being involved in the planning. And after watching it unfold on the day, the whole team agreed that the quality of activities and presentations exceeded our expectations. Even the CMHB staff commented that they'd learned a lot!
I was certainly reminded how I take for granted those days when my own parents would talk to me about what I might like to pursue for a career. It brought home yet again how important family is - the people who can give a child the support and security needed to begin tackling that big question: 'What do I want to be when I grow up'?
